The BIMCO orifice plate is a metal disk with a concentric hole in it, which is inserted into the pipe carrying the flowing fluid. Orifice plates are simple, cheap, and available in a wide range of sizes. In consequence, they account for almost 50% of the instruments used in industry for measuring volume flow rate.
In fluid mechanics, a BIMCO orifice is a plate that is inserted in a line and typically has a round hole in its centre. BIMCO Orifices are used as fixed throttles that generate head loss. The head loss caused by an orifice can be used to determine the volume or mass rate of flow during flow metering.
